Breanne Nelson

End-of-Life Doula

Hello, my name is Breanne Nelson. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate (LCSW-A) and a certified End-of-Life Doula. My Doula training was completed through Emberlight,

formerly the Center for Conscious Living and Dying. I am a mental health therapist at Abide

Inclusive Therapy who specializes in issues of grief and loss, adjusting to terminal illness, and

caregiver stress and burnout.

Outside of that mental health work, I contract as an End-of-Life Doula to provide information, education, coaching, support and bedside care for the dying. Additionally, I work with an organization called Heartfelt Haywood which focuses on living, grieving and dying well by providing support groups, creative healing, caregiver support and community resources. I am queer-identified and affirming of all relationship structures.

As a Death Doula I look at my role as helping process the intense feelings surrounding our own death or the death of someone important to us. My role is to help clients identify what is most important to them in their remaining time, and work with a variety of other providers and services to advocate for the clients wishes.

End-of-Life Doula work can incorporate a wide array of services. For some it starts with the

news of a terminal illness and involve advanced care and legacy planning. This may look like

informed conversations about end-of-life decisions, filling out legal and medical paperwork, and informing friends and families of the client’s wishes. I can also help with reviewing all of the options related to home funerals or non-traditional ceremonies and alternatives to burial and cremation.

For others end-of-life services may begin when hospice enters and death is more imminent. My services are to support both the person dying and the loved ones that live on. I can act in all ways that a traditional non-medical caregiver may, the role often played by family and close friends. In conjunction with hospice services, I can provide bedside care, medication

administration and other treatments. I can provide respite and resources for caregivers. I can

bring in alternative support services such as massage, acupuncture, or sound healing.

After death, I can continue to support family and friends through funeral/ceremony planning and support, healing rituals, and grief follow-up.
